STORY HIGHLIGHTS Photographer found Marilyn Monroe and Jayne Mansfield negatives in 1980 Who shot them and how they ended up at a garage sale is unknown, man says Finder, art appraiser David Streets welcome public help in solving the mystery RELATED TOPICS Marilyn Monroe Jayne Mansfield Los Angeles (CNN)  -- Photographer Anton Fury's hobby of searching weekend garage sales for collectible toys led him to dozens of apparently unpublished photos of a young Marilyn Monroe. Fury has allowed CNN to publish the images just days before what would have been Monroe's 85th birthday. They apparently were taken during a photo session before she was well known. "I found an envelope of negatives, didn't know what they were, but I realized they were old," Fury said. He paid $2 for the folder, which contained two envelopes of black-and-white negatives.

STORY HIGHLIGHTS Marks found in tiny chamber at the end of a passage date from 4,500 years ago The painted hieroglyphs and stone markings were filmed using a robot camera Scholars hope they will explain why the mysterious shafts were built London, England (CNN)  -- A robot explorer has revealed ancient markings inside a secret chamber at Egypt's Great Pyramid of Giza. The markings, which have lain unseen for 4,500 years, were filmed using a bendy camera small enough to fit through a hole in a stone door at the end of a narrow tunnel. It is hoped they could shed light on why the tiny chamber and the tunnel -- one of several mysterious passages leading from the larger King's and Queen's chambers -- were originally built. The markings take the form of hieroglyphic symbols in red paint as well as lines in the stone that may have been made b

Isabeli Fontana . Mert Alas and Marcus Piggott . Vogue Paris . Is it just us or do Mert & Marcus have a little  Meisel  crush?  Remember their recreation of Meisel’s Kristen McMenamy Vogue Italia cover?  This time around they cast  Isabeli Fontana  as a 21st century version of  Linda Evangelista  by Meisel on the cover of VP. We’re beginning to see a pattern, though Meisel isn’t the only photographer M&M have paid tribute to.  Their series of covers for LOVE  draws direct inspiration from the work of Helmut Newton. Arica Update #2

Image
The final day of the Arica Chilean trials was contested at El Gringo this morning with the top 7 riders securing a birth in the main event. The morning started with some smaller but cleaner 3-5 feet waves as an early offshore groomed the waves into perfect peaks. The trials were used to showcase a new 4-man priority system that would see less hassling and more focus on getting the best riders on the best waves. IBA World Tour manager Terry McKenna explains. “ This was driven by the riders that wanted a system that would be user friendly and make sure that no waves were wasted by excess jostling in the line-up, and it worked perfectly”

Fourth 'Pirates of the Caribbean' set for worldwide domination

Image
With consumers already streaming into theaters since the start of the summer moviegoing season three weeks ago, Walt Disney Studios is looking to create an all-out tidal wave this weekend with "Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides." The fourth entry in the adventure series starring Johnny Depp has a good shot at being the first film this year to open with more than $100 million at the box office in the U.S. and Canada. Estimates of opening weekend ticket sales range from $95 million to about $120 million, according to people who have seen pre-release audience surveys. But the movie's biggest booty will be overseas, where the picture could match the $200-million-plus international premiere of the last "Pirates" film in 2007. Early results from 10 countries where "Stranger Tides" opened Wednesday were strong, with total ticket sales of $18.5 million. In Russia, the movie  posted the biggest opening day in the country's history with $5 mill

A cloud of smoke and ash over the Grimsvoetn volcano in Iceland, Agence France-Presse-Getty Images By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS, Published: May 21, 2011 at 9:23 PM                    REYKJAVIK, Iceland (AP) — Iceland's most active volcano has started erupting, scientists said Saturday — just over a year after another eruption on the North Atlantic island shut down European air traffic for days. Iceland's Meteorological Office confirmed that an eruption had begun at the Grimsvotn volcano, accompanied by a series of small earthquakes. Smoke could be seen rising from the volcano, which lies under the uninhabited Vatnajokull glacier in southeast Iceland. A no fly zone has been designated for 120 nautical miles (220 kilometers) in all directions from the eruption. Isavia, the company that operates and develops all airport facilities and air navigation services in Iceland, described this as standard procedure around eruptions. "The plume o

Adriano de Souza Wins Billabong Rio Pro, Leads ASP World Title Race

The Billabong Rio Pro, stop No. 3 of 11 on the men’s ASP World Title Series, saw the world’s best surfers tackle a variety of conditions after a week of lay days and ran at both the lefthander of Arpoador and the tricky beachbreak of Barra Da Tijuca over four consecutive days to decide the 2011 Billabong Rio Pro winner. De Souza, who was a standout throughout the Billabong Rio Pro, won several close heats on the final day of competition before scalping a commanding victory over Burrow with the support of a massive Brazilian crowd behind him.

Leave a Message - A Women's Surf Movie

Image
Currently #1 in the ASP World Tour Hawaiian Carissa Moore This generation of girls command much more than simple recognition. These six unique surfers are changing the sport. They turn heads and make jaws drop. They love life, and its shows. Together they embody all that women's surfing has become. Leave a Message is a true testament to just how much this generation of surfers have changed their sport. This is a performance surf film, with an emphasis on performance. But beyond the groundbreaking aerials and long barrels is a message that transcends well beyond the lineup: enjoy what you do and do it to the fullest. Unintentionally, these girls have written a new script for women's surfing. Deliberately, they've left their message.

2011 Festival de Cannes

Image
Here we are again in May 2011 for a new edition of the Cannes Film Festival. The story continues, the story begins, the story is invented and re-invented every year and at the same time, the festival team and the city of Cannes prepare to greet artists and professionals from around the world. With, shall we say, love, appetite and impatience. For it seems that floating on the Croisette is a scent of lightness, desire and peace. If each edition has a particular mood, 2011 is already, even before the first screen lights up, very exciting. Why, how and when does public opinion decides that "Cannes will be great this year"? It's a mystery ... and rightly so. Consider what is required: the enthusiasm of the press at the announcement of the selection on April 14th, the arrival of the greatest filmmakers, actors and other film artists, the massive return of professionals, film-buffs, and a vibrant Film Market. As to the weather, unless our favorite Icelandic volcano acts alone
