This is the reason Kelly Slater missed his first round heat at the Billabong Pro, Jeffreys Bay in South Africa. The 10-time world champ's been Tweeting like mad about skipping out on the J-Bay contest 'cause he's sick of missing good swells to compete in poor ones. Cloudbreak, Fiji has been hammered by some of the best swell the island of Tavarua's seen in a long time, and any big-wave dude worth his salt has been all over it.

Thanks to said swell, yesterday Kell missed his first round match-up against Brazilian Alejo Muniz (who won the heat) and local wildcard Shaun Payne. As we said yesterday, our prediction is that the king will waltz in late to the repercharge round and make at least a semis-berth. Though, if the Fiji swell don't dissipate, that could be wildly incorrect.

"Magic Mike," Steven Soderbergh's dramatic comedy set in the world of male strippers, will have its world premiere as the closing night program of the Los Angeles Film Festival next month. The film, which stars Matthew McConaughey and Channing Tatum, opens theatrically on June 29. The festival, June 14-24 at L.A. Live's Regal Cinemas downtown as well as at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and REDCAT, announced its lineup Tuesday morning. Film Independent, which presents the festival, previously had announced the opening night presentation (Woody Allen's "To Rome With Love") and its three galas ("Beasts of the Southern Wild," "Middle of Nowhere" and "Seeking a Friend for the End of the World"). The fest, sponsored by the Los Angeles Times, will screen more than 200 features, shorts and music videos. Alex Uranga from the Basque Country in northern Spain is the winner of the   2011 Nissan Reunion Bodyboard Pro at Les Archers in Saint-Pierre, Reunion. Uranga, 22, who won the trials into the main event, took his winning streak all the way to the final, defeating Jake Stone from Dunsborough in Western Australia, with minutes to go, in glassy four to six foot waves. The Basque was carried on the shoulders of his brother and a friend from the water’s edge to the presentation area while the crowd whistled and cheered for him. He dedicated his win to all the people who believed in him back in the Basque Country. “It’s incredible”, said Alex Uranga, “I can’t put these feelings into words”. Jake Stone, 22, beat reigning world champion and local, Amaury Lavernhe in the quarterfinal and Frenchman Pierre-Louis Costes in the semifinal.
