There has never been a world championship surfing event in the State of New York, and it has been more than 20 years since an elite level professional surfing event has set stakes in the sands of the United States' east coast. The decision to create the $1 million Quiksilver Pro New York was made with equal respect for the world's best surfers, the global surf industry, and New York's surfers who embody the pure motivation that inspires every surfer on Earth.

Quiksilver has never been afraid to roll the dice. The surf industry didn't build itself on ‘safe'. Surfing wasn't always a viable livelihood. There has never been anything conventional about it; in fact, the stand against convention and popular perception has, in essence, fueled the sport's allure since its inception. Surfers are inherently risk-takers, and no matter what their station in life, they'll tell you that their choice of the path less taken has paid off. That same spirit fuels the sport, its athletes, and the surf industry today. It is what has kept the surfing lifestyle current and cutting-edge for decades. Over the past 40 years, Quiksilver has been the vanguard of an industry, a lifestyle, and a sport. Not surprisingly, they produced the most successful and respected world champion the sport will ever know in Kelly Slater.

Memorable moments in the Quiksilver story include:
1969: Quiksilver starts in Australia with technical and fashionable boardshort creations that spawned an industry. Their designs have remained leading edge ever since.

1978: Quiksilver launches their first pro surfers – Wayne ‘Rabbit' Bartholomew & Bruce Raymond - who embarked upon the fledgling ASP pro tour. Rabbit was world champion that year.

1984: Quiksilver starts what remains the most venerated tribute event in the history of the sport and still runs to this day: The Quiksilver In Memory of Eddie Aikau, a mammoth big wave event held at Waimea Bay, Oahu, Hawaii.

1990: 18-year-old Kelly Slater is signed to the brand.
1992: Kelly Slater wins his first of 10 world titles – the youngest men's world surfing champion ever.
1995: Quiksilver beat a path through the remote Indonesian jungle to the tip of south-west Java where they staged the first off-the-grid dream event at G-Land.
1998: Kelly Slater wins 6th world title and Quiksilver is the first surfing company to be publicly listed on the New York Stock Exchange.
2010: Kelly Slater clinches his 10th world title, the oldest men's world surfing champion ever.
