MARK YOUR CALENDAR FOR THE 2013 WAIMEA OCEAN FILM FESTIVAL
Screenings Jan. 3-6 in Waimea and Jan. 8-11 on Kohala Coast
HAWAI‘I ISLAND—The pastoral town of Waimea and the sun-drenched Kohala Coast provide the backdrops for the 2013 Waimea Ocean Film Festival (Ocean Film). Opening Thursday, Jan. 3, the third annual event immerses participants in a greater understanding and awareness of the ocean. Through a combination of films and activities, Ocean Film inspires, educates and engages participants in a celebration of the ocean and island culture.

Cinematic fun is January 3-6 in Waimea before moving January 8-11 to Four Seasons Resort Hualalai. In addition to screening 30 to 40 exceptional and award-winning films, Ocean Film offers breakfast talks, Q&A filmmaker sessions, compelling panel discussions, artistic exhibits, receptions, a Taste of the Island and ways to get wet—try yoga on the beach and outrigger canoe lessons.
“We’re proud to be partners again in the Waimea Ocean Film Festival,” says Robert Whitfield, regional vice president and general manager of Four Seasons Resort Hualalai. “The works and events presented within this festival are inspiring, entertaining and quite frankly, a lot of fun.”
Festival passes are available as six-punch passes, film passes and contributor passes and can be conveniently purchased now online. Kama‘aina and Early Bird Pass Rates are available until Nov. 15. A festival schedule will be posted online in mid-December 2012 and updates can be found on facebook at Waimea Ocean Film Festival.
Special hotel rates are offered to festival pass holders at the Mauna Kea Beach Hotel, Hapuna Beach Prince Resort, The Fairmont, Orchid, Hawai‘i and Four Seasons Resort Hualalai—ask for the Waimea Ocean Film Festival rate when phoning a reservation.

"Magic Mike," Steven Soderbergh's dramatic comedy set in the world of male strippers, will have its world premiere as the closing night program of the Los Angeles Film Festival next month. The film, which stars Matthew McConaughey and Channing Tatum, opens theatrically on June 29. The festival, June 14-24 at L.A. Live's Regal Cinemas downtown as well as at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and REDCAT, announced its lineup Tuesday morning. Film Independent, which presents the festival, previously had announced the opening night presentation (Woody Allen's "To Rome With Love") and its three galas ("Beasts of the Southern Wild," "Middle of Nowhere" and "Seeking a Friend for the End of the World"). Alex Uranga Wins 2011 Nissan Reunion Bodyboard Pro!

Alex Uranga from the Basque Country in northern Spain is the winner of the   2011 Nissan Reunion Bodyboard Pro at Les Archers in Saint-Pierre, Reunion. Uranga, 22, who won the trials into the main event, took his winning streak all the way to the final, defeating Jake Stone from Dunsborough in Western Australia, with minutes to go, in glassy four to six foot waves. The Basque was carried on the shoulders of his brother and a friend from the water’s edge to the presentation area while the crowd whistled and cheered for him. He dedicated his win to all the people who believed in him back in the Basque Country. “It’s incredible”, said Alex Uranga, “I can’t put these feelings into words”. Jake Stone, 22, beat reigning world champion and local, Amaury Lavernhe in the quarterfinal and Frenchman Pierre-Louis Costes in the semifinal.
