It’s an interesting battle for the World titles at the moment with three former World Champions and a kid from Port McQuarie leading the way into the second semester on the IBA calendar. In the GSS rankings  Guilherme Tamega  (Brazil) has proved to be a serious contender after an amazing performance in heaving 10 foot barrels at El Grino, Chile. Fighting off cramps & fatigue Tamega showed the world that he still has the skills & stamina that earned him multiple World titles by defeating Dave Winchester at The Arica Chilean Challenge. “ I needed this to keep me going,” said Tamega after the final. And no doubt he will take this momentum into the next GSS event at Sintra, an event that he has won before.

PUERTO ESCONDIDO, Oaxaca / Mexico (Saturday, Aug 13, 2011) -  Jeff Hubbard (HAW) has won his second IBA Grand Slam event of the year, in massive 10-12 foot surf at Puerto Escondido, Mexico. Hubbard, took out Ryan Hardy (Margaret River/AUS) in the Final, to win the 2011 AGIT/Turbo Zicatela Pro, presented by Found Boards, ID Boards and Colorada Surf.

Tamega Wins Arica!

South American powerhouse, Guilherme Tamega (BRA, Copacabana) has defeated  Dave Winchester (AUS, NSW, Mullumbimby) 16.00 pints VS 13.00 points, to take out stop No. 3 on the 2011 IBA World Grand Slam Series (GSS), the Arica Chilean Challenge. . The win, accompanied by 2000 GSS points was no easy feat. In building 3-4 meter swell, Tamega gained momentum on his fellow competitors, navigating through monstrous barrels and launching huge rolls over the notorious El Gringo reef, covered only by inches of water. After being carried onto the podium by his fellow countrymen, Tamega covered up the tears as he thanked his family and friends for their support, contributing to this memorable win. ”This is like a dream come true.
