Gilmore in Running for Top Gong.

Australia's four-time world surfing champion Stephanie Gilmore has been nominated for another Laureus sports award.

Gilmore, who is currently recovering from a fractured wrist and ligament damage sustained during an assault, is in contention to win the World Action Sportsperson of the Year Award for the second straight year.

The 22-year-old will be up against fellow surfer Kelly Slater, who won his tenth world title in 2010, British BMX star Jamie Bestwick, windsurfer Victor Fernandez, New Zealand's freestyle moto-cross rider Levi Sherwood and US snowboarder Shaun White.

The award will be decided by a panel of 46 sporting greats - including Steve Waugh, Cathy Freeman, Franz Beckenbauer, Martina Navratilova and Jack Nicklaus - and presented at a ceremony in Abu Dhabi on February 7.

Australia's Matt Cowdrey has also been nominated for the World Sportsperson of the Year with a Disability Award, after winning six gold medals at the 2010 world swimming championships in Eindhoven.

Mark Webber's Red Bull Formula One team will battle Spain's FIFA World Cup-winning football team, the All Blacks, Inter Milan, LA Lakers and the European Ryder Cup-winning team for the World Team of the Year Award.

Alex Uranga from the Basque Country in northern Spain is the winner of the   2011 Nissan Reunion Bodyboard Pro at Les Archers in Saint-Pierre, Reunion. Uranga, 22, who won the trials into the main event, took his winning streak all the way to the final, defeating Jake Stone from Dunsborough in Western Australia, with minutes to go, in glassy four to six foot waves. The Basque was carried on the shoulders of his brother and a friend from the water’s edge to the presentation area while the crowd whistled and cheered for him. He dedicated his win to all the people who believed in him back in the Basque Country. “It’s incredible”, said Alex Uranga, “I can’t put these feelings into words”. Jake Stone, 22, beat reigning world champion and local, Amaury Lavernhe in the quarterfinal and Frenchman Pierre-Louis Costes in the semifinal. Film Independent announces lineup for Los Angeles Film Festival.

"Magic Mike," Steven Soderbergh's dramatic comedy set in the world of male strippers, will have its world premiere as the closing night program of the Los Angeles Film Festival next month. The film, which stars Matthew McConaughey and Channing Tatum, opens theatrically on June 29. The festival, June 14-24 at L.A. Live's Regal Cinemas downtown as well as at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and REDCAT, announced its lineup Tuesday morning. Film Independent, which presents the festival, previously had announced the opening night presentation (Woody Allen's "To Rome With Love") and its three galas ("Beasts of the Southern Wild," "Middle of Nowhere" and "Seeking a Friend for the End of the World"). The fest, sponsored by the Los Angeles Times, will screen more than 200 features, shorts and music videos.
