The new public library in West Hollywood isn't expected to officially open until October, but at least one component of the complex is already garnering public attention: a new group of murals created by street artists Shepard Fairey, Retna and Kenny Scharf. The outdoor murals are a joint project by the artists, the city of West Hollywood and the Museum of Contemporary Art. They can be found on the library's parking structure, near the corner of Melrose Avenue and San Vicente Boulevard, across from the Pacific Design Center. Andrew Campbell, the city's cultural affairs administrator, said in an interview that officials had invited MOCA Director Jeffrey Deitch to tour the library while it was under construction. He said Deitch saw the walls and thought they would make an ideal extension of the museum's " Art in the Streets " exhibition. As we said yesterday, our prediction is that the king will waltz in late to the repercharge round and make at least a semis-berth. I am pressing against a secure wall, not daring to step away. The wind is whipping against me — or is it howling? My feet feel rubbery on the narrow walkway. I think of those balconies on the upper floors of colonial homes in old ports, where pacing wives would gaze out to sea, seeking the long-overdue ships of sailor husbands: widows’ walks. If this particular walk were open to an anxiously pacing public, I can only imagine how many new widows and widowers would be left behind. But I look out, and the vision is literally breathtaking, the Hudson shimmering in the west, and a patch of green off to the north — Central Park — lying just beyond some half-hearted high-rises. It's been a little over 12 months since the island of Tavarua had exclusive access to the waves of Cloudbreak and Restaurants in Fiji lifted.  Just 12 months ago the Fijian government stepped up, opening access to the wave for anyone, not just guests of the resort. Tavarua also dropped their prices just a touch, so the island's steadily been at capacity since. This also meant that the latest swell the island's been pounded by was ripe for anyone with enough braves to get a piece of it.
