Opening Thursday, Jan. 3, the third annual event immerses participants in a greater understanding and awareness of the ocean. Zietz (above) was on a roll that only gained momentum, ending in a $40,000 win at the REEF Hawaiian Pro as well as an early lead on the Vans Triple Crown of Surfing hydrated by vitaminwater series ratings. Photo ASP/Kirstin Kauai's Sebastian Zietz, 24, has posted the first major win of his five-year pro surfing career at the REEF Hawaiian Pro today to qualify for the 2013 elite ASP World Tour. Accounting for talent like John John Florence (HAW), Sunny Garcia (HAW), Julian Wilson (AUS) and Alejo Muniz (BRZ) along the way, Zietz earned $40,000 in prize money and now leads the 30th anniversary Vans Triple Crown of Surfing series ratings. Conditions today were super contestable with long, overhead waves that allowed maximum scoring potential. The Bay Will Call The Day The 28th annual Quiksilver In Memory of Eddie Aikau, a one-day big wave invitational surfing event that requires waves measuring 20 feet or more, is excited to announce its list of 2012/13 Invitees and Alternates. The event holding period begins on December 1, 2012, and concludes on February 28, 2013.

A group of divers about 250 miles off the coast of Baja, Mexico came across a whale shark in distress. With rope tangled around its body, the shark was in need of some help. While one of the divers distracted the shark, another swam beside it and removed the entanglement.

This may be about to change with a $1 billion mission to drill 6 km (3.7 miles) beneath the seafloor to reach the Earth's mantle -- a 3000 km-thick layer  of slowly deforming rock between the crust and the core which makes up the majority of our planet -- and bring back the first ever fresh samples.
